Brussels, 01/12/2014 (Agence Europe) – MEP Barbara Spinelli (GUE/NGL) has tabled a written question to the European Commission asking for the launch of infringement proceedings against Italy over violence against migrants, the groups has announced in a press release.

The written question has been signed by 34 MEPs, mainly from the GUE/NGL. Spinelli says that a circular sent out by the Italian Ministry of Interior on 25 September states that “irregular migrants refusing to be identified are guilty of a crime”. “In addition, an annex attached to the circular specifies: 'The police authorities will in any case obtain photos and fingerprints, even with the use of force, if necessary'”, she says. These instructions do not comply with European law and contravene the charter of fundamental rights, Spinelli states. The MEPs are also seeking amendment of the circular. (SP)
