40 years since the military coup in Chile

“On this day, the 40th anniversary of the coup in Chile, I would like to pay tribute to Salvador Allende and the thousands of Chilean people who were murdered, tortured and who went missing under the Pinochet regime,” Spanish MEP Willy Meyer said today in the chamber of the European Parliament.

The US-backed military coup on 11 September 1973 led to the overthrow of President Allende and brought General Pinochet to power. Pinochet's repressive dictatorship lasted 17 years.

For the GUE/NGL, oppression, human rights violations and a failed policy-shift towards neoliberalism are the sad legacy of the coup. 11 September is also a day to renew our solidarity with the people of Latin America.
