Telecoms Package - GUE/NGL the only group to stand up for online freedom of speech
Speaking after today's European Parliament vote on the Telecoms Package, Swedish GUE/NGL MEP Eva-Britt Svensson expressed her disappointment with the passing of telecoms legislation that falls short on consumer protection and freedom of speech.
"The compromise deal does not prevent private companies introducing restrictions on end users rights" she said. "Furthermore, it doesn't incorporate our Group's Citizens Rights Amendments and means that the European Court of Justice will decide on conflicts of interest and the right to freedom of speech."
"It amazes me that the Pirate Party voted yes in a clear betrayal of those who elected them to defend internet freedom. This package is a compromise on citizens' rights," said Svensson.
Final vote on Trautmann report: 510 in favour, 40 against, 24 abstentions.
