MEPs call on Elio Di Rupo to act on Afghan refugees in Brussels

A cross-political group of MEPs has sent a letter to Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupio, calling on him to help the approximately 200 Afghan refugees who have been residing in a church in central Brussels for over two months now.

GUE/NGL MEPs are among the 28 MEP signatories who support the refugees' campaign for their right to remain in Belgium.

The Afghans have no access to documents to regularise their situation and do not have the right to work or to any type of social protection.

Belgium and the European Union must meet their obligations towards civilians in danger, particularly in view of the fact that Afghanistan is reported as one of the most dangerous countries in the world by the UN High Representative for Refugees, and that the armed forces of various European countries, including Belgium, are present there.
