During the European Parliament's plenary session this morning, a debate was held over the current situation in Turkey.

German MEP, Martina Michels stated: "The EU is currently writing cheques to encourage Turkey to close its borders to stop the flow of refugees into Europe. The HDP offices have been decimated and this has been allowed to happen with the tacit agreement of the EU."

Greek MEP, Kostas Chrysogonos added: "Turkey is going down a slippery slope towards totalitarianism. The HDP offices have been targeted by the state, along with freedom of expression, freedom of the press, and even online freedoms. Those who disagree with the government are being arrested. We need to help refugees, but not Erdoğan."

Cypriot MEP Takis Hadjigeorgiou also spoke the question of Cyprus: "The President of the Council referred to the fact that the Cyprus question might be resolved. But we cannot have a settlement if Cypriots still cannot buy property or live where we want within Cyprus. This violates the EU principle of freedom of movement. We can live anywhere in Europe, but not within our own country."
