MEP Hadjigeorgiou elected VP of Left Group
26 June 2009, Cyprus Mail: AKEL’s newest European Parliamentarian (MEP) and MP Takis Hadjigeorgiou has been elected as one of five Vice Presidents of the EP’s European United Left-Nordic Green Left group.
According to an AKEL statement, "this prestigious event shows the repute and respect enjoyed by AKEL within the Left Group".
The Left Group’s new President is German MEP Lothar Bisky, who succeeds French Communist Party representative Francis Wurtz. The Frenchman led the group for his last two terms of office before retiring as an MEP after 30 years.
The other four Left Group vice-presidents are Eva-Britt Svensson (Sweden), Ilda Figueiredo (Portugal), Kartika Liotard (Netherlands), and Miloslav Ransdorf (Czech Republic).
