LEFT MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT FROM LATIN AMERICA AND FROM GUE-NGL REJECT EU FREE TRADE AGREEMENTS.

Seville, 15th May 2010.

GUE-NGL Members of the European Parliament participated in the IV EUROLAT plenary session held in Seville, Spain. EUROLAT brings together parliamentarians from Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean. The GUE-NGL delegation was composed of MEP´s Willy Meyer, Ilda Figueiredo and Jürgen Klute, as well as Mauricio Miguel and Mireia Rovira as GUE-NGL advisers.

The Left of the EU and Latin America-Caribbean were in full agreement that Europe cannot give lessons on regional integration. All the Left Mps demanded the full respect of the Latin American and Caribbean integration process, which is not equal to the European process.

Latin Americans are taking the first step towards an integration process based on public intervention in the economy and by putting natural recourses at the service of the general interest. On the other hand, in Europe, the Washington Consensus, with its transfer to the consensus of Brussels, through the processes of deregulation, privatisation and wage restraint, has led us to most severe crisis in its history. In Europe, Greece, Spain and Portugal are all examples of how the European social model is being dismantled.

The working group on immigration of the Assembly approved a document that backed, on the request of GUE-NGL MEP´s, the displeasure of Latin America and the Caribbean and rejection of the EU Return Directive since it criminalises migrants whose only offence is to flee their countries looking for a better life.

Among the documents that were presented for discussion in the Assembly, the report of the Political Committee was totally rejected by the Latin American Members and GUE-NGL MEP´s, so the Rapporteur, Socialist Ramón Jáuregui, was forced to withdraw it. This document had a certain air of European paternalism and insisted on distinguishing the situation in Latin America without analyzing the one in Europe.

The Left Members of Parliament, the Left of Latin America and the GUE-NGL MEP´s finally approved the "Seville Declaration" which promotes, inter alia, relations between both continents based on solidarity and mutual respect. In this sense, they rejected the FTA signed by the EU with Colombia and Peru, and the Association agreement with Central America, that hides a pure commercial treaty in order to safeguard European investments in the region.
