PLO decision on Israel recognition ´unhelpful´
GUE/NGL MEPs Martina Michels and Barbara Spinelli have urged the Central Council of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) to reconsider their decision to suspend recognition of Israel, considering it unhelpful for the resumption of the peace process.
“The left in Europe is committed to a peaceful, viable and just two-state solution through negotiations between the two-sides and based on the 1967 borders,” the two MEPs, members of the European Parliament Delegation for Relations with Israel, stated. “The recognition of Israel remains the cornerstone of EU policy in the Middle East, especially for Germany and Italy.”
“Trump´s decision to recognise Jerusalem as exclusively Israel´s capital, against the backdrop of the rapid expansion of illegal settlements, creeping annexation and the siege on Gaza, has had a devastating effect on bilateral relations and on future negotiations.”
“However, the ongoing deadlock in negotiations won´t be solved by an extreme decision, which will be perceived as desperate and ultimately self-defeating,” they concluded.
