Another Europe is possible

Chernobyl - 30 years on

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, GUE/NGL held a special round table dedicated to the severe consequences of this nuclear accident for Belarus on April 6.

Jiří Maštálka, who hosted the round-table stated: "I am very glad to have the possibility to raise this topic in the premises of the European Parliament, both because of my personal experience and the fact that my group, the GUE/NGL, is planning a trip to the region affected by this disaster at the end of May."

Three well-known experts from Belarus from different backgrounds took part in the event explaining the viewpoints of an NGO, the Ministry for Emergencies and Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. All participants agreed that the Chernobyl accident is a pan-European problem that does not recognize borders between states. And today, together with international partners, with European friends and with everyone who feels solidarity with the people affected, we would give a renewed impetus to international cooperation in overcoming the consequences of Chernobyl and the restoration of contaminated areas.
